Season 2 has yet to set an official release date but has been filming in the UK for several weeks now and is expected to wrap production between September and October 2023. Even after the death of King Viserys when he was ordered by Otto Hightower to assassinate Rhaenyra at Dragonstone, Westerling resigned from his post in defiance of the order and the Hightowers' attempted power grab. She later took on the name of the White Worm and formed a spy network, often working for the likes of Otto Hightower and even being instrumental in finding Prince Aegon so he could take the Iron Throne after Viserys' death. Mysaria debuted early in House of the Dragon as a pleasure house worker visited by Prince Daemon, who she developed something of a relationship with.

House Targaryen

When he was younger, Alicent and Viserys' youngest son was a late bloomer, as the only one of his siblings who had yet to bond with a dragon. He eventually claims the largest living dragon in Westeros, though he has to pay a price. Ashton made his debut on the 2018 historical film Peterloo, and later acted in the TV series Deep Water, The Bay, and Red Rose. The second son of House Strong is often called the Clubfoot because of his physical birth defect, and he uses a cane to walk on his twisted right foot. Though he's very cunning, he's often looked down on, with his older brother Harwin as his fierce protector. He's also very ambitious, forming an allyship with Alicent Hightower and only revealing his ruthlessness after the ten-year time jump.

Nolan has also appeared the films Pan and London Road. The second son of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and, officially, Ser Laenor Velaryon. Redford has also appeared in the series Shadow and Bone and Gap Year. The daughter of Lord Corlys Velaryon and Princess Rhaenys Targaryen, the sister of Ser Laenor Velaryon and, later, the second wife of Prince Daemon Targaryen and the mother of his two daughters, Lady Baela and Lady Rhaena Targaryen. He's also Rhaenyra's biggest challenge to the throne as Viserys' firstborn son. Jace's shy younger brother Luke is played by Sadler in episodes 6 and 7 and Grihault (seen center in brown cloak) in later installments. While House of the Dragon is Grihault's first credit, child actor Sadler previously appeared on the Apple TV+ comedy Trying.

If it does, Condal and Sapochnik are thankfully not in the same position Benioff and Weiss were in when they launched Thrones with only four of Martin’s planned seven A Song of Ice and Fire books written. The Dragon showrunners know their ending and have a plan for the production to run a certain number of seasons. “Shows are a product of their time, and there’s a lot more awareness now about what we’re portraying and why — and who’s having the conversations about it,” Bloys says. Much of the show’s action plays out in The Red Keep — the seat of power in King’s Landing from which the Targaryens rule. Sapochnik gives a tour, pointing out familiar sites from Thrones, such as the staircase where the Hound and the Mountain fought their fateful last battle and the courtyard where Cersei once threatened Littlefinger. These once-separate sets have been re-created as a united playscape of interconnected rooms and staircases, where directors can stage action that seamlessly flows from one room to another.

There are also three animated projects — possibly four — in the works. There is also a focus on childbirth and its inherent dangers, a story thread that feels timely in the wake of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade. “The child bed is our battlefield” is how one female Dragon character puts it and, indeed, the first season does for giving birth what Game of Thrones did for weddings.

That doesn’t mean that we won’t see them again someday, but at least Paddy Considine does not have to jeopardize his own health for another stunning performance that the awards circuit decides to ignore. Mysaria came to Westeros with nothing and was sold more times than she can recall. She could have wilted, but instead she rose to become the most trusted ally of Prince Daemon Targaryen, the heir to the throne. The first teaser for House of the Dragon was unveiled on October 5.

The upcoming Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon, will feature an extensive ensemble cast. Set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, we get to see familiar houses and families at different stages of power, as well as powerful houses like the Velaryons who are all but wiped out by the time Game of Thrones begins. Like its predecessor, House of the Dragon will likely have plenty of drama, conspiracy, and questionable relationships between its characters as the season moves forward, but here’s what we know about the main cast so far. Daughter of the Hand, Alicent Hightower is played by Emily Carey in her youth and by Olivia Cooke as an adult. Because of her father’s position, Alicent was raised in the Red Keep and grew up as a friend to Princess Rhaenyra. House of the Dragon isn’t the first time that Emily Carey has played the younger version of a strong and powerful woman.

The second season is set to premiere on June 16, 2024, consisting of 8 episodes. Daemon is the younger brother of King Viserys and heir to the throne. A peerless warrior and a dragonrider, Daemon possesses the true blood of the dragon, but as it's well known, whenever a Targaryen is born the gods toss a coin in the air. Ser Criston Cole is “the common-born son of the steward to the Lord of Blackhaven” and although he doesn’t have any land or a title, he is an incredibly skilled swordsman.

The adult Princess Rhaenyra is played by Emma D’Arcy, who you may recognize from the short-lived Prime Video series Truth Seekers and the Netflix original Wanderlust. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Milly Alcock has landed a recurring role on the series, playing a young version of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, the king's first-born child. She is described as being "of pure Valyrian blood" and "a dragonrider," as is typical for the people native to the Valyrian Peninsula. Her character bio suggests that "many would say that Rhaenyra was born with everything… but she was not born a man." House of the Dragon is the latest of Smith's roles in high-profile TV series.

But she eventually left him after losing interest in serving as a pawn to further his goals of taking the Iron Throne. This began Criston's new era of intense loyalty to Alicent, even supporting her son Aegon's claim to the Iron Throne, with him even being the one to personally crown the new King after Viserys' death. After King Viserys' passed up Corlys' proposition that he marry his daughter Laena, the Master of Ships departed King's Landing. It was through this matter he found common ground with Prince Daemon, and the two even waged a several-year war together, one which was eventually won. Lord Corlys Velaryon, the richest man in Westeros who serves as the Master of Ships on King Viserys' small council, earned the nickname of the Sea Snake for his adventuring past that reportedly may be explored in a future spin-off.

The subject of succession is at the heart of the series. While Princess Rhaenyra should be the rightful heir to the Iron Throne, her legitimacy is questioned because she is a woman. Prince Daemon Targaryen, the king’s brother, is also a major candidate.

Based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and tells the story of House Targaryen. Even through this apparent power grab, Rhaenys clearly still had compassion for her family, expressing concern at Viserys' declining health. Eve Best's Rhaenys held the nickname of "The Queen Who Never Was" after a change in Jaehaerys' heir deprived her of her claim to the throne. Wife to the Master of Ships, Lord Corlys Velaryon, Princess Rhaenys Targaryen is the cousin to King Viserys and the granddaughter of his predecessor on the Iron Throne, King Jaehaerys I Targaryen.

Emma D'Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen

The Russian-born actress has appeared in Banshees, Krypton, and played Xela in Game of Thrones season 5 episode 5, The Bells. A knight of the Kinsguard who serves in King's Landing alongside his identical twin brother, Ser Erryk. The Swedish actress has appeared in the series Partisan and the film Black Widow and has starred in many Swedish television shows including Irene Huss and Hassel. The Welsh actor is best known for his television roles in Where the Heart Is, Caerdydd, The Tudors and Stella. He has also had small film roles in blockbusters such as Justice League.

Emma D'Arcy as Rhaenyra Targaryen

Alicent is the daughter of Otto Hightower, the Hand of the King, and the most comely woman in the Seven Kingdoms. She was raised in the Red Keep close to the king and his innermost circle. As a result, she possesses both courtly grace and keen political acumen.

Roger Evans plays Lord Borros Baratheon

As Queen Consort of the Seven Kingdoms, Alicent is the mother of Prince Aegon, Princess Helaena and Prince Aemond. While there are other Westeros-related series in development, “House of the Dragon” is the only confirmed “Game of Thrones” spinoff show (so far). “Flea Bottom” would focus on everyday citizens born in the poorest district of King’s Landing, and the idea of an animated series is also being floated around. King Viserys' cousin Rhaenys is a Targaryen princess and dragonrider, who married Lord Corlys and has two children with him, Laena and Laenor.

Matt Carver and Theo Nate as Young Laenor Velaryon

Midway through the season, the story jumps 10 years and the roles are taken over by Olivia Cooke (Ready Player One) and Emma D’Arcy (Truth Seekers). The show’s two male leads are older and played by the same actors throughout. There are additional multiyear time jumps within the 10-episode season as well — a structure more like the way The Crown unfolds over the course of its entire run than like Thrones. Baela and Rhaena are the daughters of Daemon and Laena Velaryon, born during the 10 year time jump before episode 6. In their younger timeline, they're played by Smethurst (seen left) and Ossei-Gerning (right). HotD is Smethurst's first major role, though she was previously credited in a 2018 screen adaptation of Twelfth Night.

Steve Carell Joins Tina Fey in Netflix Comedy Series ‘Four Seasons’

The Australian actor is best known for his roles in the Aussie series Packed to the Rafters and Love Child, along with roles in the films The Wolf Creek, The Water Diviner and Holding the Man. Known as "Breakbones", Ser Harwin Strong is noted as the strongest Knight in the Seven Kingdoms and is the heir to Harrenhal. Ser Harwin has a liking for Princess Rhaenyra and also serves in the City Watch of King's Landing.

Aside from Doctor Who, Matt Smith has also starred in The Crown, Edgar Wright’s latest film Last Night in Soho, and Morbius. Tom Glynn-Carney fills out the cast as Aegon Targaryen, the first-born son of King Viserys, together with Ewan Mitchell as Aemond Targaryen, the second-born son of Viserys, nephew to Daemon, and half-brother to Rhaenyra. Phia Saban is also in the mix as Helaena Targaryen, the second-born daughter of Viserys, sister to Aegon and Aemond, and half-sister to Rhaenyra.

House of the Dragon is child actor Hart's first television role, after previously appearing in the short film Hopscotch. Young Laenor Velaryon is Corlys and Rhaenys' first-born son and heir to Driftmark. We meet the young noble as he attends events with his family, before he serves as a soldier during his father and Daemon's conquest of the Stepstones, with the help of his dragon, Seasmoke. He is then betrothed to Rhaenyra, though the two agree to have their own lives within the marriage, as Laenor is gay.

Tom Glynn-Carney as Aegon Targaryen II

Mysaria is a slave from Essos who became a prostitute in Westeros. She has a special romantic relationship with Daemon, enough that he brings her with him as he flees King's Landing at the end of episode 1. When we meet her again in episode 9, she's built a seat of power among the common folk.

Hopefully, we will at least see the inevitable showdown between Daemon and (Mini-Me) Aemond, and if that plot point follows the Fire and Blood book, both men should be very afraid. Game of Thrones fans can’t wait for the HBO prequel, House of the Dragon. The recent teaser trailer gave fans their first peek at what’s to come for House Targaryen.

After the 10-year time jump, Laena is married to Daemon and mother to two twin girls, Baela and Rhaena. She's also a fierce dragonrider and is bonded to the oldest and largest dragon in Westeros, Vhagar. When we meet her in episode 6, she's expecting her third child and wants to return to her ancestral home Driftmark, and most of all she wants to live and die as a dragonrider. Following the time jump, Laenor is still married to Rhaenyra and stays by her side as they welcome their third child (though he's probably not the father to any of their children). He names the baby Joffrey, after his lover who died at their wedding feast.

After working as a stage actor, he was catapulted to international fame while playing the Eleventh Doctor in the long-running sci-fi series Doctor Who. He then went on to play Prince Philip in the first two seasons of Netflix's The Crown. He's also appeared in the films Terminator Genisys (alongside his Thrones descendant Emilia Clarke), Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Last Night in Soho, and Morbius. House of the Dragon is an American fantasy drama television series created by George R. R. Martin and Ryan Condal for HBO.

When her father breaks centuries of tradition and names her as heir, it precedes a clash for the crown that sets off a Targaryen civil war.

House Targaryen is responsible for giving us the Mother of Dragons herself, Daenerys Targaryen, and now there is a new lineup of characters emerging, ready to breathe fresh life into the onscreen Game of Thrones universe. Keep reading for our comprehensive rundown of who's playing who in HBO's House of the Dragon – and we'll keep this article updated with every new casting announcement. A knight dubbed "The Knight of Kisses" who serves House Velaryon and is the lover of Ser Laenor Velaryon until his death at the hands of Ser Criston Cole.

The following main cast members are confirmed for House of the Dragon season 2. House of the Dragon season one has finished airing, though the first season can now be streamed on HBO Max in the US and Sky TV and streaming service, NOW in the UK. House of the Dragon is Elliot's first major credit; Harvey Salder played the younger version of the character. Former Lord Commander of the Kingsguard Ser Harrold Westerling is one of the most honorable men at court.

All required courses in the certificate must be taken for a letter grade; a grade of “C” or better is required for the course to count towards the certificate. Missed class meetings will have a negative effect on student grades. The UCLA Extension Landscape Architecture Certificate is a post-baccalaureate program similar in scope and length to a Master of Landscape Architecture degree. It is a low-residency hybrid in-person program designed to be three years long, with no option for an accelerated track. New students will begin this program in either Summer or Fall quarter.

How can I make my backyard more attractive?

The 2021 Trend Report from Cision reveals that outdoor living areas are more valuable than ever before. Landscape architects reveal that more and more clients are looking to extend their living spaces outside. Our goal is to provide you with effective tools to help plan out even the most inventive ideas you might have. Stop wasting time and money on specialists who don't know your preferences or CAD programs that have a steep learning curve.

Rustic Covered Porch

In this Tudor revival house, black lanterns, urns, doors and windows against white brick create a contemporary yet classic feel. Paperbark maple trunks on this terrace not only create visual interest, but add shade, privacy and a treehouse feel. Although we have an outdoor fire pit area at the Vermont cabin, it’s pretty far away from the house up a huge hill.

Hang Up String Lights

For a rustic, laid-back look, leave your wooden bistro chairs, stone walls and terracotta pots open to the elements so they weather over time. We love how everything in this English-style garden looks as if it’s been there forever. A miniature waterfall brings a spa-like feel to landscape designers Brad and Meredyth Hilton’s urban garden, while small ‘Green Velvet’ boxwood hedges soften all the hardscaping.

Use Woodsy Colors

There’s no need to find a power outlet for these solar-powered LED lights; they light up automatically when it’s dark out. Their brass sockets and vintage-style bulbs bring a chic look to any setting, too. The 28-foot strand features 12 sockets, each 1.6 feet apart, and comes with a 1.5-watt solar panel for outdoor use. Outdoor lighting plays a big role in setting the mood of your space, so you buy try the kind of atmosphere you’re trying to create, and buy the lights that will help you bring that idea to life. If you're looking to cultivate a more modern look, cool white lights with a minimalist design work well.

Set Up Multiple Seating

To get the look of this stunning yard in Vancouver, create a symmetrical arrangement of raised beds, fill them with go-to herbs and vegetables, and lay out paths of fine gravel. Plant a row of trees or allée, a walkway lined with trees or tall shrubs, around your backyard using slim-trunked trees like these lindens in this city backyard. Border your flowerbeds with simple rock walls, letting moss, grass and wildflowers — like the pretty malva, calendula and Johnny jump-ups shown here — spill over for maximum charm.

After a second portfolio review, students produce a capstone project that reflects the values, skills, and knowledge acquired over the course of study. The Landscape Architecture Certificate program is designed to give students a strong foundation in the design, technical, and theoretical aspects of the discipline. The curriculum is structured as a sequence of design, technical, and breadth courses. The goal of the program is to integrate these three areas into a single body of knowledge so that each segment is understood in the context of its relevance to the others.

More traditional fixtures with warm lights may be a more complementary fit a rustic home. For decks, patios, and fencing, a set of small, wall-mounted fixtures are effective, and outdoor string lights always feel like a festive touch. These function similarly to indoor sconces without the need for interior wiring.

Wood decking frames the pool like a boardwalk, and fiberglass sofas add a glam note. Cool blue and white cement tiles bring geometric interest to stylist Emily Henderson’s patio. Garden, expert gardener Thomas Hobbs uses preexisting cedars as a backdrop for all-white ‘Blushing Bride’ hydrangeas around the pool. Instead of olive trees, which won’t thrive in the Canadian climate, Thomas potted weeping silver-leafed pear in planters to give the silvery leaves more grandeur. The enviable crop of zinnias and dahlias in the garden not only attracts songbirds, they provide enough blooms in a huge array of colors for a steady supply of cheery arrangements all summer long. In this case, contemporary landscaping can be enjoyed from a pair of artful benches.

This article is part of our Museums special section about how institutions are striving to offer their visitors more to see, do and feel. If you have a knack for pruning, why not create some eye-catching topiaries? The spherical shrubs in this French-inspired garden make a handsome statement. Whether your game is bocce, pétanque or horseshoes, you won’t regret designing a designated games area — especially if you’re a frequent entertainer. In this historic Palm Beach home, the loggia is trained with vines blooming with fuchsia flowers to add incredible vibrancy.

We’re particularly smitten with this arch-shaped design in Colette van den Thillart’s yard. An artful planter in a fresh white shade lends even more impact to the fiddle leaf fig tree. The planter’s composite stone and fiberglass construction makes it lightweight to move around, and drainage holes keep roots from getting waterlogged. This Palm Beach home has the added benefit of a covered pavilion, so the addition of an Oushak rug makes this spot feel extra luxe. These bright yellow rudbeckia (or Black-eyed Susans) are perfectly at home in a cottage garden. Easy-care native perennials add a splash of color but won’t become invasive or require pesticides, meaning more time on the dock with a drink instead of a trowel.

In these variations, the narrator is a woman bemoaning her return to prostitution. Male singers made it “the ruin of many a poor boy,” which transformed the title establishment into a gambling den. For her second album, Del Rey went for a sound even more lush than on her debut, and the relentless strings of “Summertime Sadness” recall the soundtracks Angelo Badalamenti composed for David Lynch’s films. “I would sit under the telephone wires and listen to them sizzle in the warm air,” she recalled. “I felt happy in the warm weather, and started writing about how sad and gorgeous the summertime felt to me.” A year after its first release, Cedric Gervais’ dance remix turned the song into a Top 10 hit. In 2004, Rolling Stone published its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

More From: Behind The Song

And it is a song that has become more than special in the history of Rock and Blues Music. But he still goes and knows that the temptations of the place are like a ball and chain that he is condemned to carry. However, it seems more likely it is a metaphor for his addictions to drinking and gambling. The Animals decided to try out “House of the Rising Sun” on the audience to finish their set. And, as Burdon later said, the reception from the audience was staggering. He had been up at the Columbia studios with John Hammond, doing his first album.

It’s one of the most widely read stories in our history, viewed hundreds of millions of times on this site. But a lot has changed since 2004; back then the iPod was relatively new, and Billie Eilish was three years old. They each sent in a ranked list of their top 50 songs, and we tabulated the results. The song is also credited to Ronnie Gilbert on an album by the Weavers released in the late 1940s or early 1950s. Pete Seeger released a version on Folkways Records in 1958, which was re-released by Smithsonian Folkways in 2009.[16] Andy Griffith recorded the song on his 1959 album Andy Griffith Shouts the Blues and Old Timey Songs. In 1960, Miriam Makeba recorded the song on her eponymous RCA album.

Early commercial folk and blues releases

It remains, without a doubt, one of the songs that shaped the 60s and, to some extent, shaped rock music. The use of light and shade and a progressive atmospheric build was innovative. Those vocals, and the essential organ part from Alan Price, lifted this song way above anything else at the time. Burdon then lets rip with all the emotion and anguish he can muster for that last verse as he pummels our senses. The song then tapers off to a gentle ending, with Alan Price again taking the lead. One of the original versions reverses the genders and is about a woman who has no option but to return to that sort of life.

In others, a man sings the narrative bemoaning his inability to let go of his sordid past, which includes drink, women, and gambling. One thing for certain is that the original version of “House of the Rising Sun” had nothing to do with New Orleans. The first people to sing it had probably never even heard of New Orleans.

But, a few notable recordings are Leadbelly from 1948, Joan Baez from 1960, and Bob Dylan from 1962. Both the Joan Baez and Dylan versions were included on their first albums, which were both very folk-oriented. Most likely, the song in its original form was a folk song from the UK.

The Time Bob Dylan Stole Dave Van Ronk’s Arrangement for “House of the Rising Sun”

Shortly after Gabriel quit Genesis in 1975, he climbed to the top of Little Solsbury Hill in Somerset, England, to reflect on his life-changing decision. It inspired his debut solo song, in which he explained to fans why he felt the need to go out on his own. Musically, it was a departure too, a pastoral tune with a 12-string acoustic guitar lead that was pointedly different from Genesis’ prog-rock. “Maybe I’ve let it go too much,” he admitted to Rolling Stone in 2011.

Home prices continue to rise, but experts see a…

I put a different spin on it by altering the chords and using a bass line that descended in half steps—a common enough progression in jazz, but unusual among folksingers. By the early 1960s, the song had become one of my signature pieces, and I could hardly get off the stage without doing it. “I really thought I was writing country songs.” It reflected the times; the 1970s were the first decade since after World War I in which more African Americans were moving to the South than leaving it.

Robert Johnson, ‘Cross Road Blues’

Keynote Records released one by Josh White in 1942,[27] and Decca Records released one also in 1942 with music by White and the vocals performed by Libby Holman.[28] Holman and White also collaborated on a 1950 release by Mercury Records. White is also credited with having written new words and music that have subsequently been popularized in the versions made by many other later artists. By the time the ’60s rolled around, the folk legend Dave Van Ronk included an intense take on “House of the Rising Sun” as a steady part of his live repertoire. His young acolyte Bob Dylan largely mimicked Van Ronk’s arrangement of the song and included it on his debut album. Across the pond at around the same time, Burdon apparently heard the song from a local folk singer in England.

The Parton version makes it quite blunt, with a few new lyric lines that were written by Parton. Parton's remake reached number 14 on the US country singles chart and crossed over to the pop charts, where it reached number 77 on the Billboard Hot 100; it also reached number 30 on the US Adult Contemporary chart. Parton has occasionally performed the song live, including on her 1987–88 television show, in an episode taped in New Orleans. In late 1961, Bob Dylan recorded the song for his debut album, released in March 1962. That release had no songwriting credit, but the liner notes indicate that Dylan learned this version of the song from Dave Van Ronk. In an interview for the documentary No Direction Home, Van Ronk said that he was intending to record the song and that Dylan copied his version.

“You couldn’t go into his studio and do any foolishness.” Their peak, “Bam Bam,” is one of the great early dancehall anthems, booming but bright, tough but playful — and it’s been sampled extensively by everyone from Lauryn Hill to Kanye West. Helen Adu’s small but fully inhabited range has been her secret weapon from the beginning. “I decided that if I was gonna sing, I would sing how I speak, because it’s important to be yourself,” she said.

Holland promised him they’d do it soon — and Stubbs’ first pass hit Number One. Far from the international superstar he’d become, Toronto singer-songwriter Abel Tesfaye didn’t even send out photos or do any interviews when he released the first Weeknd album. “The whole ‘enigmatic artist’ thing, I just ran with it,” he said. Montero Hill was an Atlanta college dropout sleeping on his sister’s couch and looking to break into music when he came across a track he liked by a Dutch 19-year-old called YoungKio that was based around a banjo sample from a Nine Inch Nails track. “I was picturing, like, a loner cowboy runaway,” he told Rolling Stone. Within a year “Old Town Road” was the longest-running Number One song of all time, seeming to sum up eons of American cross-cultural love and theft in just one minute and 53 seconds.

However, it was the vocals that set the song apart, especially when Eric went up an octave. Besides that, Most just didn’t like it when they played it to him. But, he later admitted when they had finished it, he knew it was special. The Animals were from the Northeast of England and were a well-known blues band even in London, 300 miles south.

Its psychological insight and philosophical meaning are all too relevant for this song to be anything but timeless. But it’s hard to imagine that anybody will ever again inhabit that doomed soul at the epicenter of the tale quite as well. Nancy (a.k.a. Ophlin Russell) was the DJ (mic controller) for Kingston’s Stereophonic sound system when she met reggae producer Winston Riley in the late Seventies.

The Animals were on tour with Chuck Berry and chose it because they wanted something distinctive to sing. The Kentucky folk singer Jean Ritchie sang a different traditional version of the song to Lomax in 1949, which can be heard online courtesy of the Alan Lomax archive. Dillard Chandler of Madison County, North Carolina sang a variant of the song beginning "There was a sport in New Orleans". I had learned it sometime in the 1950s, from a recording by Hally Wood, the Texas singer and collector, who had got it from an Alan Lomax field recording by a Kentucky woman named Georgia Turner.

Van Ronk recorded it soon thereafter for the album Just Dave Van Ronk. Although the date and author of the song are unknown, some musicologists have said that it resembled ballads of the 16th century, and could very easily have derived from one of that time. As a popular folk song, the oldest record of “House of the Rising Sun” in reference to a song was 1905, and it was first recorded in 1933 by an Appalachian group.

Howard explains his positive songwriting method and how uplifting songs can carry a deeper message. Michael Jackson's "Human Nature" was written by the keyboard player from Toto, who was working on the Thriller album. The voice is that says "here we go" in the AJR song "Bang!" belongs to Charlie Pellett, the announcer on the New York City subway ("stand clear of the closing doors, please").

So, we shouldn’t be surprised to find references to ‘The Rising Sun.’ It is a common name for an English pub even today. Pubs of two to three hundred years ago were often “houses of ill-repute.” The song was likely carried to America by immigrants who performed it there, from whence local names and traditions became intertwined. Keynote Records released one by Josh White in 1942, and Decca Records released one also in 1942 with music by White and the vocals performed by Libby Holman. A song is written, and, if it’s special enough, it hangs around waiting for an artist to claim it, putting their indelible stamp on it so that all other versions are henceforth compared to that one unforgettable take.

There were only two singers that could do that and make it work so well. “House of the Rising Sun” went to #1 on both sides of the Atlantic and was the first major Folk-Rock success. First, there was that iconic guitar arpeggio to start the song that every learning guitarist tried to play but couldn’t. Then there was a powerful organ solo in the middle that ‘Pricey’ dragged out of his shaking Vox Continental.

Fittingly, she debuted the hit-to-be at Alexander McQueen’s show at Paris Fashion Week. Notified by fax that her services in the Pixies were no longer required, Kim Deal called up her twin sister, Kelley, to be her new guitarist (never mind that she didn’t know how to play guitar) and had the last laugh when this absurdist gem became an MTV phenomenon in 1993. Furthermore, it seems that the song has been in existence for at least three hundred years. It has been known under a variety of names and has also switched genres. In some versions, it is about a woman who is returning to prostitution.

Burdon brought it into the Animals, who electrified the song for their 1964 self-titled debut album. Hilton Valentine played the stoic arpeggiated guitar part that foundations the song, while Alan Price tore into the organ solo as if trying to free every tortured soul trapped in this sinister place. “We had the sense that it could be taken as a novelty song, and people aren’t going to take the album seriously,” Sharp told Rolling Stone. After producer Ric Ocasek heard the receptionist at the recording studio humming it, he insisted they keep it in. In August 1980, Dolly Parton released a cover of the song as the third single from her album 9 to 5 and Odd Jobs. Like Miller's earlier country hit, Parton's remake returns the song to its original lyric of being about a fallen woman.

More From: Behind The Song

Like many folk songs, "The House of the Rising Sun" is of uncertain authorship. The music video for "You Are A Tourist" by Death Cab For Cutie was done live on the internet, becoming the first live, scripted, single-take music video recorded that way. Many have sung “House of the Rising Sun” before Eric Burdon took it on with the Animals, and many will sing it in the future.

He was being very mysterioso about the whole thing, and nobody I knew had been to any of the sessions except Suze, his lady. Holman and White also collaborated on a 1950 release by Mercury Records. The Animals, from the English coal town of Newcastle, changed the gender in the lyrics, and keyboardist Alan Price created the new arrangement. The man who created Yacht Rock with "Sailing" wrote one of his biggest hits while on acid.

Other early recordings include Woody Guthrie’s version from 1941 and Bob Dylan in 1961. The version by the Animals, however, is by far the most popular, and Dylan is often annoyed when it is assumed that he covered that song from them. The Animals' version of the American folk song is considered one of the 20th century’s British pop classics. While the original version was sung in the character of a woman led into a life of degradation, the Animals' version is told from the view of a young man who follows his father into alcoholism and gambling ruin. White learned the song from a "white hillbilly singer", who might have been Ashley, in North Carolina in 1923.

Old Time Music is proud to have such a passionate and talented team of writers who share their love for music with our readers. We hope you enjoy the articles and insights they bring to our platform. This is a song that is instantly recognized by those first seven or eight guitar notes.

The result is a more expansive, inclusive vision of pop, music that keeps rewriting its history with every beat. A lot of people have sung the song over the years, and there will be a lot that still will sing it. The message in “House of the Rising Sun“ still has relevance today, which is why it is called a timeless song. However, I doubt anyone will ever come close to Eric Burdon’s rendition, which creates the feeling of the tortured soul the song is about. There are far too many versions of “House of the Rising Sun” to list them all.

As producers, Elliott and Timbaland had already made their rhythmic impact on hip-hop and R&B before Missy’s first single. And some high-profile features had even introduced Elliott’s bobbing, whizzing rap style to audiences. But still, no one could have predicted “The Rain,” with its ghostly sample of Ann Peebles’ “I Can’t Stand the Rain,” memorable Beenie Man misquote (“Who got the keys to the jeep?”), and twitchy yet sleek beat. It is a great song for them to perform, but it wasn’t the only one that raised the roof. For most bands, when you had a big-name artist that was to follow, you usually end up with a bit of a rocker.

Famous Yugoslav singer Miodrag "Miki" Jevremović covered the song and included it in his 1964 EP "18 Žutih Ruža" (eng. "Eighteen Yellow Roses"). Colombian band Los Speakers covered the song under the title "La Casa del Sol Naciente", in their 1965 album of the same name. For now, renting may still be slightly more advantageous than buying, but Johnson cautions people to reinvest any remaining money to get the full benefit.

He was nonetheless now a believer and declared it a single at its full length, saying "We're in a microgroove world now, we will release it". Everything was going fine and, "Hey, would it be okay for me to record your arrangement of 'House of the Rising Sun?'" he asked. In 1962, Bob Dylan had sung this grim tale of a Southern girl trapped in a New Orleans whorehouse.

But, they rarely had three different “high points.” This song did, which is one reason why “House of the Rising Sun” is so unique. The song was first recorded in 1933 by Clarence Ashley and Gwen Foster under the title “Rising Sun Blues.” In response to a question about the song’s origins, Ashley said that his grandfather had taught it to him. Grandfather Enoch was married at the time of the American Civil war, which places the timeframe we are looking at in context. It got a tremendous reaction from the audience, convincing initially reluctant producer Mickie Most that it had hit potential, and between tour stops the group went to a small recording studio, De Lane Lea Studios on Kingsway in London to capture it.

Owner Faizulla Karzai and his family moved to St. Louis from Portland, Maine. He first came to the United States from Afghanistan 24 years ago to serve with the U.S. military. He later learned to cook at The Helmand, a well-known Afghan restaurant in Baltimore, Maryland.

Visitors' opinions on KABOB HOUSE

Karim offers eight kinds of biryani including fish, tandoori chicken, and egg, and eight types of kebab (plus the popular mixed grill, a combination plate of chicken and beef kebabs). The menu also boasts 15 curries from korma to karahi; “chef specialties” like nalli nihari, a rich and slow-cooked beef stew; and upwards of 20 vegetarian (mostly vegan) dishes, such as aloo gobi and daal tarka. “This is for the business,” Karim says, since many of his customers eat plant-based food for religious, environmental, or health reasons.

He was born and raised in Karachi and then lived in Bangladesh and Germany before settling down in Los Angeles in 1981. When Karim was tired of working for someone else, his passion for food drove him into the restaurant business. He picked up a few cooking fundamentals from his late wife, who Karim says “was the number one chef that I ever met,” and the rest he taught himself from watching YouTube. He’d watch five to six different chefs — either Indians, Pakistanis, or Bangladeshis — make their own renditions of a given dish and then use those learnings to create his own version. Today, he’s most proud of his Hyderabadi lamb biryani, which is Biriyani Kabob House’s top-selling dish. Karim won’t divulge what makes his interpretation so fluffy and perfectly balanced, with its savory, aromatic notes and tender, fatty lamb.

Food is a huge part of life in the Mediterranean, whose rich culinary history is infused with ingredients like olive oil, feta cheese, lamb, and taziki yogurt. This shared food history is why Biriyani Kabob House is a broadly South Asian restaurant, serving dishes that could be considered Indian, Bangladeshi, or Pakistani. The main differences between each country’s cuisine have to do with what’s abundant on their land, along with various cultural and religious factors.

Our time-honored recipes, handed down to us from generation to generation, use only the finest and freshest ingredients sourced from local farmer’s markets. The kabob house occupies the former Snax Gastrobar space, at the southeast corner of Watson Road and Potomac Avenue. At the moment, there's no signage, with just the south end of the burgundy awning over the patio revealing the name.

Ratings of KABOB HOUSE

Abu Daher, a longtime friend of Karim’s who owns a mechanic shop nearby and eats at Biriyani Kabob House several times a week, says that, more often than not, all of the 10 tables are occupied. During the day, sunlight shines through a panel of draped windows, while at night, purple and green string lights add color to the compact space. Fresh cut romaine with diced tomatoes, cucumbers, onions and parsley. Mixed with lemon, olive oil, vinegar and mint.Add Chicken, Gyros, Falafel or Grilled Shrimp for $5.

WE SERVE THE BEST FOOD OF THE COUNTRY

As for kebabs and biryani, Karim says they are executed similarly across all three cuisines. The only difference, he claims, is that Bangladeshi biryani, compared to that of India and Pakistan, is less spicy and also a bit sweeter, on account of ingredients like cinnamon and nutmeg. Before opening Biriyani Kabob House, which expanded to a second location Downtown in early 2021, Karim worked as an aeronautical engineer for 30 years.

Our menu of interesting flavors and healthy, home-made food will delight your senses and keep you coming back for more. A delightful combination of bulgur wheat, parsley, red onion, tomatoes, lemon juice, and mint. Six grape leaves stuffed and seasoned with fresh herbs. Afghan Kabob House quietly opened last week at 3500 Watson in the Lindenwood Park neighborhood.

He then traveled to cook at an Afghan restaurant in Miami, Florida, and eventually opened his own place. He then returned to Portland, Maine, where he owned two popular Afghan restaurants. He sold the restaurants and moved to St. Louis last year to join his wife’s family here and to be a part of the larger Afghan community. © 2023 biriyanikabobhouse.com All rights reserved.

Add Chicken, Gyros, Falafel or Grilled Shrimp for $5. Medium cut fries that are crisped to a golden brown perfection and topped with a generous sprinkling of feta cheese. Six pieces of crispy and fluffy falafel, made in house from an old world recipe.

For the most part, however, Biriyani Kabob House relies heavily on meat, a nod to the abundance of livestock in Pakistan, where many dishes are meat-based. Start with the Afghan naan (baked in an elongated oval) and mast, or house-made yogurt, which is deliciously tart and made in house. The vegetarian ash (pronounced osh) soup consists of a nest of noodles, freshly chopped herbs, yellow dal, small red beans, and chickpeas, and yogurt, which melts into the soup and adds flavor. Mantu—little dumplings stuffed with onion, beef, and cilantro—are topped with a yogurt and yellow dal sauce. Our family originated from a hidden paradise surrounded by olive trees, which grow on the hillsides and continue all the way down to the sea.

We focus our entire existence on creating Eudaimonia. That’s why we obsess over the quality of our food and the freshness of our ingredients. There’s a line half a dozen deep on a Monday afternoon at Biriyani Kabob House, a strip mall Pakistani restaurant in the northeast pocket of Koreatown bordering Little Bangladesh.

ALL FOR FOOD, AND FOOD FOR ALL

WE SERVE THE BEST FOOD OF THE COUNTRY

The atmosphere offers good lighting, comfy seating. Eventually, the owner plans to acquire art from Afghanistan and St. Louis to hang on the walls. The warm atmosphere of this place makes customers feel relaxed and have a nice time. A lot of people find that the staff is patient at this spot. This restaurant scored 4.9 in the Google rating system. Great food, in the right setting, prepared and served by people with the right mindset, can be the catalyst for that deeper, richer, more meaningful happiness.

Kabob House is a family-owned and operated restaurant that is devoted to family values of integrity, honesty, passion, and commitment to quality. Our mission is to create an environment that combines extraordinary food with exemplary service to bring a full Mediterranean experience to the Temecula Valley. As Karim recounts, the Mughals brought their food, notably kebab and tandoor ovens, with them. Soon after the sun goes down, the restaurant, which is open every day from 11 a.m.

We invite you to join us for an unforgettable culinary experience. The art of Mediterranean cooking is a balance of simplicity, passion, and imagination. What is the best time to cruise to the Western Caribbean?

Cruise to Caribbean and discover the cliff-diving, breeze-swaying, sand-between-your-toes, no-worries pace of island life. Hundreds of years of history have left jungle ruins from ancient times and vibrant colonial towns with brightly painted buildings reflecting a fascinating history. See towering mountains like Petit Piton in St. Lucia, explore the lush rainforests of Belize, or boost your adrenaline as you zip-line through the treetops of Labadee or Honduras. If calm, contemplative nature is more your thing, spend the day admiring cascading waterfalls in Jamaica and the vivid coral reefs of Bonaire, home to manta rays and parrot fish.

They also have exclusive access to CocoCay, their private island in the Bahamas. Daytime – During the day on a cruise, you will either be onboard at sea or exploring a port. During sea days, I spend most of my time at the pool, so pack a swimsuit with a cute cover up to wear when heading inside for activities or dining. On land, Royal Caribbean delivers unique adventure tours and guided excursions that satisfy all types of travelers.

ROCK THE RUINS IN ROATAN

Costa Maya is a port destination on the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico. It is a very popular cruise port, but there isn’t much other tourism in the area. Some other great activities in Cozumel are a boat snorkel tour or this jungle ATV tour. Although you won’t see the whole island like on the above tour, these are great options if you want to focus on one activity. If a destination is known for beaches, I’ll opt to explore on my own and spend time relaxing.

Lose yourself in the tones of Calypso steel drums and the majesty of Mayan ruins with a cruise to Caribbean. Conch — a meaty sea mollusk with a large shell — isn't an ingredient you come by much in other parts of the world, but it's an integral part of Western Caribbean cuisine. Or try it served raw, finely diced and marinated in citrus juice in Caribbean conch salad. Each Caribbean island has its own identity, attractions, culinary delights and natural wonders. Whether or not you stop there before cruising, these are the top five museums in Galveston you should check out. Dive under the sea, fly above the ocean, and treasure-hunt through the jungle with a cruise to Western Caribbean.

SOAK IN THE VITAMIN SEA

Since the island is only 40 miles long by 10 miles wide, its doable to see the entire thing in one day. Next, decide if you want to take a planned excursion or tour, or explore the port on your own. If there is one key activity or site to see in a destination, I typically opt for a tour since it allows you to learn more in a short amount of time and takes away the stress of planning. Or spend your day in the Yucatan or Cozumel exploring Mayan ruins that are still standing after thousands of years.

Go back in time and discover the beauty, the mystery and the culture of the venerated Mayan people. From the tropical islands of the Caribbean to the European shores, discover all the amazing places you can visit on a cruise out of Tampa. Here are 10 of the fascinating places you can cruise to from Tampa Florida. Indulge in the best private island vacations in Labadee and discover all that this island has to offer for thrill-seekers and chill-seekers alike. Here's how to choose between eastern vs. western Caribbean cruise itineraries for your dream vacation. Start your engines and coast down a Haitian mountainside at 30 miles per hour while experiencing some of the best views that Labadee has to offer.

However, it can be difficult to coordinate your tour with the ship. For food, pick one lunch spot or snack that you want to try when you’re on shore. Even better than their “hard product” described above, the service on Royal Caribbean is unparalleled. Even onboard a ship of 4000+ passengers, the dining and stateroom staff memorized our names and preferences.

Choose your preferred season to sink into white sand beaches on Grand Cayman or relax in your own private cabana on Labadee. Wash down some chips and guacamole with a refreshing michelada in Mexico, or hang out with monkeys and iguanas at Gumbalimba Park in Roatan, Honduras. Give yourself plenty of time to play on a long voyage, so you can get to know the character and excitement of the Western Caribbean. Dive among vibrant coral reefs off the coast of Belize, or hang out with monkeys in the nature sanctuary at Roatan, Honduras. On a seasonal basis -- the high season, of course, being the period between the Christmas holidays through spring break -- you'll find every other line.

No matter where in the world you choose to wander, cruises can take you deep into top-rated cruise ports and off-the-beaten-path gems, so you can experience each one like a local. It's always wise to book your shore excursions in advance of your cruise to the Caribbean. Grand Cayman offers incredibly clear waters, perfect for spotting sea turtles and stingrays during a swim or snorkel. Hike through jungles in Mexico for an experience that combines stunning scenery with historical treasures. Or snorkel the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef off the coast of Belize City or Roatan, Honduras. No matter what, you will find your favorite Western Caribbean cruise port.

The Dragon's Tail Coaster is the perfect roller coaster ride for thrill seekers and adventure lovers. Spend the day under the dazzling blue waters of Cenote Azul, Mexico, and explore its colorful sea life. The freshwater cenote is super clear, making it the perfect place for a dive, snorkel or swim.

Most cruise lines including Carnival, Celebrity, Princess , Disney, Royal Caribbean, Holland America, Norwegian Cruise Line and Viking Ocean Cruises all feature Western Caribbean itineraries. Luxury cruise lines like Regent Seven Seas and Silversea also frequent the region. The seafood is fresh, the sun is shining and there’s a whole lot to do, so get out there and explore the city before, during and after your cruise from Port Canaveral, Florida. Dinner Attire – Dinner most days is casual attire, but there are some dress code requirements. For the main dining room, men should wear a collared shirt, and women should plan to wear a sundress or nice blouse.

When you book with one of our partners, please be sure to check their site for a full disclosure of all applicable fees as required by the U.S. The best and most popular activity in Costa Maya is a day trip to the nearby Chacchoben Mayan Ruins. I highly recommend this tour to visit the ruins and learn about the history of the area.
